Sudan

Leader: President Omar Bashir
Population: 39.6 million (1.9 million Christians)
Main Religion: Islam
Government: Republic
World Watch List Rank: 6
Source of Persecution: Islamic extremism/Dictatorial paranoia
Islam is deeply embedded in Sudan's culture. Islamic law is the foundation of the nation's justice system, and apostasy (converting to a different religion) is punishable by death. Such blasphemy laws are frequently used to prosecute Christians, particularly Muslim-background believers, and a significant number of Christians have been imprisoned. President Bashir has used the rise of radical Islam to maintain his power base, and as such his government has demolished churches, killed Christians through targeted bombings and allowed others to kill Christians with impunity.

Please Pray:
- For strength and comfort for those imprisoned for their faith, particularly Muslim-background believers
- For protection for Christian girls, who are often forced to marry non-Christian men
- Praise God that, in spite of persecution, the church in Sudan is growing. Ask God to use the church in Sudan to demonstrate the love of Christ to their nation.
